Sandwich Generation

Enjoy every sandwich-Warren Zevon

It has been said that the Sandwich Generation is a generation of people who care for their aging parent(s) while supporting their own children. I never really thought much about this term until recently, when my sweet mother (and my next door neighbor) began to have some concerning health issues and I've been taking her to several doctors' appointments.

And my three teenagers have been needing me various ways. As a daughter, mother, wife, and the church cook, the hours in a day are way too short and my energy level waning. I am pressed on both sides by many needs.

I have been purposely staying quiet. No blog posts, not too many social interactions, working less; to spend more time talking with my children, even it meant staying up until the wee hours just talking, reading aloud more books to my youngest, or taking my mother out to fun restaurants in-between her medical appointments. Because they are my precious gifts from God and I won't have them too long with me. So I intend to enjoy every moment with them!

So, come and celebrate with me on my new season of the "Sandwich Generation"! Here are some previous sandwich posts to share with you.

  1. Ms. Kay you are doing a wonderful thing - ensuring those closest to you ALWAYS come first. Sometimes the best thing to do is unplug from the extra "stuff" and refocus. We should all take a moment to do that from time to time. Everything else can wait, our family and our time with them cannot.
    Inspirational as usual. Love, Megan
PS - That blackened salmon sammie looks divine. I'm suddenly hungry.

  2. Kay, though we miss you hereabouts, it's great that you're cutting back so that you can spend time with your kids and mama. I also love how you connected this all to some seriously delicious sandwiches, heh heh.

  3. How admirable that you are making time for your family, and what creativity you have to re-post the "sandwich" recipes. I'm going to try the Monte Cristo!

  4. Oh we love you!!! Your food and your sweet family!!!! Please tell Grandma hello from us and that Samuel says, "Donk-ee-ahh". (I probably tortured the spelling of that word.)

PS. Thinking of JH a lot since we have a lot of birds in our yard...one time a huge flock of robins.

  6. You are wise. Children grow up so quickly and you never get that precious time back. And caring for you Mom is very important. Bless you for being the person you are.

  13. There is nothing more important than family and I'm glad you're taking the time. My parents live a mile from me and I believe that they will soon need more constant care....

The sandwiches are delightful - thank you for sharing.

  14. I was wondering why it was quiet, but you have your priorities correct! As you know I lost my mom last year and I regret that she's not with me. I wish I had taken her to eat more often, gone to get manicures, etc.

  15. You are a wise woman to recognize family priorities before all else, Kay! And using that sandwich metaphor, enjoy all those wonderful spicy ingredients that make your family so wonderful!

Terrific sandwich options for the fans of your site! I'm liking the look of that Oyster Po'Boy!

  18. I feel for you Kay.. although, my sandwich is one sided... open-faced, as it were. I've become mom's caretaker after her stroke. Although I long for the days when she is back to full speed, this time with her has added a dimension to our relationship that I never had growing up.

I've booked marked this to come back this weekend and peruse the sammiches (you know I love stuff between bread :))
