Brie, The Guardian of Hens

This is our dog, Brie. She came to us six months ago and decided that she would adopt us as her family. We are not sure what type of breed she is. But with her huge ears and gentle brown eyes, she won our hearts.

She is quite good at digging up my flower garden, taking my neighbors' dog toys without asking, chewing up shoes, and treeing the cats. But recently, we found out that she is also good at guarding our free range chickens.

Each afternoon, she waits patiently by the gate until they are released in our backyard.

And greets them as they stream out the gate.

And with her big, black tail wagging, she happily strolls where ever the chickens go. If she hears a chicken squawk, she is the first one there to see what is happening.
Her work is not done until the last of our 18 hens are safely roosting in their hen house.

And we are so glad she came to us and made us her family.

  1. when a dog chooses you for its family, it is the most special relationship of all. our lab roamed the neighborhood before deciding that we belonged to him. he was devoted to his boy, Justin, and allowed him to do anything..and everything...to him. when he died at the age of 12, we were lost. enjoy brie and spoil her rotten! i hope you don't mind if i share this with my fur loving friends!
    hugs,
    kathy

  2. It's amazing Brie leaves the chickens alone. Most dogs would have chicken dinner!! :0) I'd love to have free-range chickens, here, but we have foxes around.

  5. maybe she is some type of herding dog... just trying to keep those chicks in check. we had one that nudged the kids with his nose to 'steer' them where he wanted them to go.

  6. Susie, we kept the chickens locked behind the fence for a long time thinking that Brie will eat them, but realized that all along she was trying to protect the hens. :)

It is very neat that this dog would guard our chickens; makes her more lovable.

  7. She's beautiful! And I love that she takes her job so seriously. Makes you wonder why we can't just all be friends and learn to play nice, doesn't it?

  9. I think I may have teared up at reading this and seeing these pictures. But I'm also a total sap like that. Kay, she is absolutely a beautiful addition to your family. (And her name is so appropriate - you can't help but melt over her adorable ears, just like a baked round of brie) ~Megan

  11. What a sweet dog, and one with such a gentle touch. It's not easy protecting a group of hens. I'm not surprised that Brie would want to be part of your family, what dog wouldn't want to be part of the fun!

Your Brie sounds like a wonderful addition to the family - she seems really special and loveable.
